![]() He’s pepper is piquant and long lasting (but not overpowering) and it ages well on the skin - never becoming sour or stale. Many scents use pepper in their formulas but I really admire He’s use of pepper. The aquatic phase lasts about five minutes, then He becomes peppery and herbaceous. A pleasant pepper note emerges a few minutes into He’s development this white pepper note, mixing with the melon, pineapple and verbena, produces a mildly aquatic accord. I also detect a hint of (what smells like) cumin this cumin note is subtle but persistent and tempers the pineapple. Usher He opens with a pop of ‘fresh’ notes and pineapple. Usher He was created by perfumer Richard Herpin and contains pineapple, verbena, melon, white pepper, lavender, violet leaf, vetiver, amber wood, black suede, sandalwood, guaiac wood and musk. Singer/actor Usher is releasing two scents this month: He and She. (I do have my limits - if Michael Vick or Ann Coulter release perfumes I won’t sniff them on moral grounds.) So: I’ll aim no more disdainful glances at celebrity fragrances I will give all scents a chance even if the face on the packaging gives me the willies. There’s always a professional perfumer behind designer/celebrity scents. Are clothing designers more naturally talented in the realm of perfumery than actors, singers, sports figures? No. Are clothing designers on a higher plane of existence than actors, singers, sports figures? No. I’ve certainly reviewed, bought and worn my fair share of perfumes released under clothing designers’ names. I recently realized my stance on celebrity fragrances is ridiculous. Aren’t celebrity fragrances a form of ‘autograph'? Wearing David Beckham’s Instinct is (almost) the same as hanging a poster of Becks on my bedroom wall - right? If I use Sean John’s Unforgivable, won’t people assume I admire Sean John and not just his cologne? I look at a bottle of celebrity fragrance and think: “Ew! Who wants to be associated with him?” I’m not celebrity-obsessed and even though I’ve seen my fair share of celebrities up close, I’ve never asked any of them for an autograph. Until today, I have reviewed zero celebrity fragrances. If it works particularly well for you, don’t hesitate to make it your standard cologne. This is an excellent ‘spring’ cologne, but it’s not wrong in other seasons. It’s not for you if you want a purely subtle scent, but it is a subtle, masculine fragrance well worth your time. You shouldn’t notice it becoming much weaker over wearing it. It should last at least six hours, or more likely closer to all day. Instead, like many of the very popular ‘fresh’ colognes, it’s simply a solid, basic scent. It tends not to overpower, though it remains on the fairly strong end of the spectrum. It’s expanded with subtler notes of mint and citrus. It’s a ‘clean’ or ‘fresh’ scent at its core. JPG’s EDT fragrance spray is a bit closer to the mainstream than Versace Pour Homme. This scent deserves its place on the best smelling cologne for men 2023 lists in every way. However, it’s well-rounded enough that you can wear it all year round. ![]() This is very nearly a perfect ‘summer’ or ‘autumn’ perfume. It could be described as ‘heavenly’ or ‘pure sex’ and these are naturally high praise. It’s nice to have a feeling of being away when you’re at work. ![]() There are also notes of beaches or the ocean, conveying a sense of vacation. It also pulls off fruity without being girly, suggesting confidence in any man who wears it. This scent also happens to be quite long-lasting, remaining properly powerful for four to six hours per application. It’s subtle to almost a fault, a nearly perfect mix in that regard. Overpowering colognes are very common, and Versace Pour Homme avoids this trap with grace. That feat is to produce a clearly masculine and manly scent while remaining subtle and alluring. Versace Pour Homme pulls off one of the most admirable feats in perfume. ![]()
